What's your favourite Michael Jackson memory ?

It's one of those moments.
It is really is.
Years from now, you will look back and find you will always remember where you were when you found out Michael Jackson died.

Especially if, like me, you grew up, to his music. If 'Bad' was among the first audio cassettes you owned. If , like me, you grew up watching a black kid trying to fit in with a cruel world by literally turning white... by watching him trying forever to be different and succeeding... by being the ultimate showstopper... the golden glove, the crotch grabbing, the 'hee-hees', the crazy fans idolation... and the music itself. I mean one of my first music video memories is him serenading a girl as only he could in "The way you make me feel". This is the guy who stunned us with the dance moves of "Smooth Criminal". I absolutely worshipped the variety of the album "Dangerous" be it the legendary "Black or White", the trademark "Jam", the haunting "Who is it", the supercool "Dangerous" or just the touching "Will you be there." If you haven't crooned "You are not alone"even once, if you haven't shaken to the beat of "They don't really care about us" or "Bad", my friend, you have not lived. This was the guy who invented moonwalking, made pop music an art form... along with the late Princess Di & Mother Teresa, he was one of the most recognisable icons all over the world at one time.

I'm not going to speak on the court cases, the bankruptcy and the final decades of a life ruined - that's not the Jacko I want to remember.
I prefer to remember him for who he was - THE KING OF POP.
In fact, seeing the grief online, I'm glad that atleast in death, people have been more forgiving of him than they were during his lifetime. I'm glad that like me, millions the world over, will remember his passing away for what it is - the end of an era.

What's my favourite Michael memory ? It's of an era I still consider the best time of my life - my school days and the memory of a friend with an uncanny likeness to the 'black Michael'. He too was a big Michael fan and we used to have the most hilarious times singing and mimicking the King. I still remember his awesomely soulful ( comical ) renditions of one of Michael's most underrated songs- Who is it. Man, you had to be there to see it - him singing to a rapt audience of teenagers in a very cool, heart rendering, ear piercing voice, the gals applauding, the guys beating the desks to his voice, the mega-cool standstill pose as featured in the pic above; sounds silly now, but back then as a teen, life was just about that - living life KINg sized. Enjoying it to the core. You can't replace that time and that era for all the Paris Hilton sagas in the world.
Generations grew up to his music decades ago... generations mourned his early and untimely demise today. I should know. Even my mom was heartbroken watching the news on his death... that says a lot.
What is your favourite Jackson memory... and favourite song ?
Below is the video of his "Will you be there"... I chose it because it shows everything I remember about him - a compassionate singer who loved to be a showman and had legions of supporters at the peak of his career... someone who was loved and respected by all. Someone who was a living God of music once upon a time.
Rest in peace, finally, Michael.

u know it was actually my mom who relayed the news to me, wen i was wondering y Mtv was dedicating things to MJ....

my fav memory of Mj ud be something related to his song "dangerous"... i was in school then and i had to visit a college for a science meet... i chanced upon their music room while roaming.. i started humming "dangerous" thinking no one was there... then suddenly some bhaiyaajis came up from behind and started playing the song.. we became pretty good friends after that.... :-)

    RIP, Pop King

  3. Was in office and got the news from the guy next cubicle..minutes after it was published. So, was the 'Breaking news' conveyer(?) for many friends and fans who could hardly believe it!

"No way!!" was the most common reaction..including mine.

BTW, the 'turning white' was not intentional..I read him up on Wikipedia today and gives lot of truth behind his 'changes'.

Ex: He was suffering from vitiligo, hence had to botch up with white and bleach to cover it up.

  14. Was shopping in a super centre when my husband passed on the news. It was a shocker. My fav memory of his would be the earth song. It was the like the first time a pop legend was grooving to the tunes of nature. Yea, R.I.P Mike, finally.

  16. Like always, yet another interesting post! :)
Remember, our Class 9 English text book had an exercise, where we had to listen to "Heal the World" and then recite the same in group?
Yeah.. that is one of my favs!

  17. Purpleheart... true. I always found it funny how ppl would say "We are the World" was a MJ song even though it had such a huge variety of artists on it.

    Maxaud, me too.. he he.

Smilie, yeah. Heal the World was an all time classic.

  18. Chanced upon your blog... It has been a nice read so far.

I have not been a fan of MJ, yet, the song, "Heal the world" is one of my favorites.

The other memory that I have of him is not a very good one. He was charged with child molestation years back. What happened thereafter I dont know. Whether he came up with new albums or not, I have no clue. Maybe, you can tell me about it.

He often reminded me of Elvis. I was not because of the connection that he had with the Presleys but maybe there was something similar in the "tele - aura" of these two diametrically different demi-gods of music...

Well, I hope he rests in peace now and somewhere up there takes the initiative to Heal the World with the Blue Umbrella Man's approval...

  19. its really sad...my earliest MJ memory is when I was 12 and sang 'Heal the world' with others at a school function.i think everyone has his own MJ memory ...thats why he was what he was...The King

  20. Hey, its me again... Just finished reading "To The Stranger I Love." Really that scared of lawyers, huh!!!?? How can you not trust a lawyer because she is a lawyer?? Lawyer and Liar are two different words with very different meanings in the lexicon. They (Lawyers) aren't that bad, I tell you. Well, you wrote that post sometime in 2007. I haven't read your 2008 and 09 posts. I hope you have found the stranger and I hope that she does not happen to be lawyer! :)

  23. i was never a big fan of MJ, but there are a few things a remember others doing.

    1. a friend of my brothers saving 15K for one year and then going to bombay for his concert. this was i think sometime in 1995. i always thought it was crazy.
    2. my brother recording his songs off the radio painstakingly because mom would not give enough pocket money to him to buy cassettes. (those days yes! )

personally, i only think MJ is the typical example of how we glorify fallen heroes once they die and we tend to forgive them for all that they had done during their living years.
