So you think you know your art ?

I'll be honest. I never got the politics of art. If I had to judge a work of art, I would have given points for creativity, colour schemes and final beauty. I find many forms of modern art annoying and frankly, idiotic, while some brilliant works are just passed off as the works of amateurs.

But perhaps the more question that comes to mind is, how much weightage do we ever give for art in our lives ? In school, it was only a secondary subject for me - 45 minutes in a week where we all would relax and have fun. I used to love drawing, painting, adding deft touches which I was sure converted my creations  into real masterpieces. Well, it's close to 6 years since I've held a brush or painted anything, but a recent article has indeed stoked my interest again.

Ever wonder how good you are at appreciating the true value of art ? Well, here's your chance.

Below, you will find 6 paintings. I want you all to type in ( in the comments section ) how much you would pay for each one of these paintings/sculptures if your loved one demanded you buy it for him/her. Don't be embarrassed to put in as small or as large an amount as you wish. It's your personal decision. You may click each picture to see a larger version of it which may aid you in seeing the quality of the work. Also, please don't go searching online or looking up it's real values. I've provided them in the link at the end of this post, which you're free to check out AFTER putting in your estimates..

1. A nice painting of a calm pond.

2. A very bright and spritely picture of a young boy surrounded by flowers.

3. A very serene picture of Jesus Christ carrying a sheep.
 4. A house by a forest.
 5. An abstract of a lone tree.

 6. A sculpture of an eerie looking thin man.

Have you put down your opinion of what each of them are worth ? Well, now that you're done, click this link and find out how close you were to guessing the true worth of these works of art.

Your article reminds me of the fact Thats painters too get paid handsomely.. And as an ardent visitor to online galleries would love to guess the prizes of these paintings.. So here i go.. 1) 20,0000 2)25,000 3)20,0000 4) 15,000 5)30,000 6) 2 Lacs

    3. 500 crores.. OMG.. Thats a lot.. And i guess most of these paintings were sold for this much money after the artists death. Or at an auction..

    4. Priya :) hehe.. exactly. The one catch more often than not is you have to be dead... and by a few centuries. :)

  2. I would buy the second one with the most amount of money. It, somehow makes me happy. It looks like a picture that I wouldn't mind seeing first thing in the morning.

And, then, probably, the first one, which I am guessing is Picasso, but not sure. Picasso had this talent of playing with the variations of the colour, using its various shades; but, then I am no expert.. just what I have read and heard. Probably its not Picasso at all!

The last three, I will not buy. Didn't like them much. Therefore, it is not worth much! And I am tired of seeing Jesus with a lamb. If he really did exist, he was much more than that. About time, a new painting comes in that shows his spirit without advertising his compassion using a lamb or an ailing mother as a prop. These pictures, and the weird looking sculpture.. they are all too stereotype to me.. Personal opinion, again.

Over all, I enjoyed taking the test.

    1. I'm pretty sure this is just a fake message considering I haven't written anything significant about abstract artists etc etc

  4. I like the second and the fifth one. They are bright and have some level of thought and detailing. The rest are dull and boring.
The Jesus one is also very detailed but I am very uncomfortable with religious paintings hanging on my walls.
I think I will shell out 15,000-20,000 for each.
I know the real price will be in lakhs but as I paint myself, I can make better paintings than 1 and 4. :D
And I opened that link and nearly fainted. The total must be the GDP of Uganda.

    1. Same here.I preferred 2 and 5.. 5 is the least valuable amongst all, but I loved the colour schemes in it.. more than 1, I was totally underwhelmed by 4 though.. it seemes so... nothing !!
As for 15-20000,well.. it may cover the transport charges home, what do you think ? :)
Easily the GDP of atleast a couple of African countries.. or the pocket money of Yedurappa's kids atleast, right ?

  7. If u really want my opinion, I'd just use my office printer to take color printouts of these 'gems' and stick 'em in my room next to the pics that I have of Pamela Anderson and Samantha Fox(the real rems!) - come to think of it, think these pics will take the charm away from Pams and Sam - so I'd pass.

How much will I pay = heh heh heh! ;)
