Our Learning curve

In my internship days, I had to look after a ward full of old men who’d come for a cataract camp. Due to the overflow, the operations were spread out over a week. On this particular morning, I woke up late and rushed through the rounds as fast as I could as I had to go the operation theatre after that. Many of the old men were angry and pissed because their operations weren’t being done on the first day itself. I didn’t have time to deal with these tantrums and blankly ignored them as I filled the notes and left.

3 hours later, I returned from the operation theatre to the ward. I had heard the news before I arrived. The old man in Bed no 608 had got fed up of his life without sight and being dependant on everyone for his needs and jumped off the 6th floor of the hospital.

Since that day in 2005, I’ve never been late for rounds a single day of my life. I’ve never let time again become an issue when dealing with a patient’s personal problems.'

The moral of the story is, I learned from my mistakes.

The siege in Mumbai is over. When the blood dries and the smoke dies down, the fact will remain etched in history – we lost this battle. We couldn’t anticipate the attack. We couldn’t protect our people. We couldn’t save the hostages. It took us 59 hours to end it. And , all credit to them, our soldiers did the best they could. They just weren't prepared for something of this level. We, as viewers, could do nothing but watch with growing frustration and helplessness as this tragedy reached it's gruesome climax.

Now, it is time to learn.

It is time to stop saying Mee Marathi and all that balderdash and stand up and say ‘I’m an Indian’ first like the NSG forces that came from all over the country to fight for you while the vada-pav chomping local fanatics slinked away and hid behind closed doors. Let’s first become a country before we become a state.

It is time to ignore the barbs which will come shortly from the political parties, blaming one religion over the other and asking for ‘cleansing the nation.’ The nation is clean, except for a few anti-social elements. Unfortunately, they are called politicians and wield Godly control over the local crowd. In their words lie the venom that will turn friends to foes and breed more hatred, insecurity and eventually, local terrorists who will betray us. Let every Indian enjoy his rights – let there be no first among equals here. This is a slippery slope we’re crossing right now – we need to hold onto each other to get through it.

It is time for the government to wake up from the revolver era and equip our policemen and security forces with better ammo and training. Like it or not, we are at war here. And it ain’t over. The next bunch of crazed teenagers with Ak-47s and almonds will be coming shortly. We couldn’t welcome them properly this week. Let’s be in a better position to welcome them at the shipping dock or airport next them they touch our soil.

It is time to let the terrorists know where we stand. The rains will drain away the river of blood. The shoulders will share the tears of abandoned spouses and orphaned children. But we’re still gonna be standing tall, even in this moment of horror. There are a billion more where we came from. It’s gonna take a lot more gun totting cowards to kill us all. Maybe a whole nation of you petty minded weasels. And the sad part is, we know your gameplan now. And we’ll be ready to play the same game next time. No more negotiations. Just the way you want it.

And as a doctor who’s sworn the Hippocratic Oath, loves puppies, eats strawberry icecream, reads Danielle Steele once in a blue moon, enjoys Sex & the City and thinks Winnie Cooper from Wonder Years was the ideal girlfriend, let me with this soft heart of mine make this request on behalf of many more softies all around India to the government –

Flay the skins off the bones of the terrorists you’ve caught alive. Make it slow. Keep them alive while you do it. Tape it all. Release it on live broadcast and the Internet so that their friends all over the world at their hidden training camps can watch what’s it gonna be like when we catch them.

We’re not answerable to anybody. Not today. Not after this.

Maybe that’ll clear any doubts they have on how the Lord chooses to treat them before he greets them.

Above all, let’s be prepared. Let’s be united.

This was a learning curve, a pretty damn big one. Let's actually learn from it, for a change.

  2. I truly wonder what a learning curve this is going to turn out to be.

Even before the end of the fight, there were already communal SMS and statements being hurled by politicians and the public at large too. If we as common man have the regional and religious divide within us, then why would any politician try to not attack at that very point.

They are doing something to move ahead in their life, so you give the ammunition, they have the revolver! Ready and set to fire.

  3. True..No mercy.

And i read this in a paper this morning,A sms meant for Raj thackrey which went some thing like this "Where is Raj Thackrey and his brave Sena?Tell him that 200 NSG commandos from Delhi(No marathi manoos, all south and north indians)have been sent to mumbai to fight the terrorists so that he can sleep peacefully tonight at Shivaji Park"

Mr Thackrey, hope u have got the message this time.Stop politicizing terror.

  4. There is so much to say and discuss, but i find it hard to stop tears because being a common man i feel so helpless, sitting back at my home in front of a t.v , watching my heroes die and my country burn LIVE...!
I want to meet those so called terrorists and look in their eyes and want to ask them...do they still call themselves human? and our political readers, pls pls pls, for heaven sake , leave us alone , leave our country , and Mr thackery , more then the outsiders we are tired of you all....
Let the youth take command of this country...
    May god bless us...

true, Aathira, I dont see our politicians learning.. now that its over they'll come out of the woodwork and start preaching hatred again.

Illeen, lovely message.. I wish I had that sms.. I would have circulated it like wildfire out here.

Tara, so true, so true. How do they justify this act is beyond me..

  7. When the state govenrment proved ineffective in curbing Raj's violence, the recent terrorist attack is no surprise!

Mumbai is a city which is part of Maharashtra only because of its geographical position. It is a very complicated city with growing needs...I think it's time to assume autonomous status and appoint a CEO to govern this lovely city.

  9. Geekie, its what I feel,man.

Aneesha, absolutely right. More than a political mind, an analytical mind is needed to govern this metro.. anyway, definitely no role for the Maharashtra govt in looking after all this

Anonymous, I too got up and left after awhile of watching the news.. it was just too much for me...
Thanks for the compliments.. pls do leave your name atleast next time...anonymous is soooo... anonymous!!

  11. Reading the flaying part, in a post from who seems to be genuinely hurt by what has happened, I began to think that what we risk the most is our soul by reacting in a way that betrays what we actually are. As a country and as a people. Don't you think that after responding in kind, we risk becoming exactly what we hope to destroy. There is no justification for cruelty no matter what the provocation. In practical terms I don't think it helps either. Torture at Guantanamo did'nt stop terrorists, it probably just created a few more.

Btw... Awesome blog... Heard bout it... checking it out for the first time..

  12. how do we feel... true.

fahd,I definitely dont justify 'returning in kind'... No justification in razing their hotels down too.. but at the same time, i am afraid i am not of the opinion of leniency to the captured terrorists.. i doubt if i can be convinced for even a 'fair trial'.. because this kid came with the pure intent of killing as many as he could... he killed women and children alike pointblank... where do we find mercy for him, I ask you ? I cant bring myself to be that big hearted...
P.S. Thanks for dropping by.. do come by often and rop in aline whenever u feel like.. it makes the whole process of writing worthwhile.

  14. We should dfntly be prepared, but I don think we as aam aadmi can do much on our own except warn if something looks suspicious / mourn the death of the slain.

  15. ap, i hope so too...

arpita, really that may be the one thing that saves us.... if we could just be more aalert to our surroundings

  16. Dear doc. I could hear an echo of some similar message posted after kargil war in your post. But doc, what you, intellectuals have done so far for this, your so-called country. You commented on your blogs, sitting on your nice armchair and chewed chicken bones. Have you tried to rectify this political system, what we need today is more and more people joining politics, to reshape this country, have you people ever gave thought. Sorry doc, if you can't take part in another revolutionary war, against political corruption, go sit in your couch and suck your thumb and write comment but don’t post it in any public blogs. We know what to be done, but who will bell the cat, to chuck those bustards out of parliament. Will you? Then write, else...

  17. June, well, I guess fire with fire is apt here.
Do you for some reason consider the work of us doctors to be insignificant.. we spend day in and day out in blood, bones and brains trying to keep mothers happy, children from being orphans, trying to save limbs which are shredded. And when we come out of the operation theatre, we get to hear that the system has failed once more and so there's gonna be more blood on the streets and at our doors.
Suck my thumbs ? Madam, I don't even have time for that.. I'm too busy keeping the people of this city happy by curing their ailments.
I work 72 hour shifts without sleep or food to keep people like you alive and happy and you tell me I don't have the right to an opinion which the whole of India concurs in.. you tell me I should give up saving lives which I do without pay or gratitude, because those who're supposed to do their job are incompetent at it.. what next ? Shall I also tar the roads cause they're broken and the labourers are unskilled ? Shall I make panipuris cause the roadside vendor doesn't make it well ?
The fact is, this is my job... saving lives. And I'm damn good at it. This is my country and I have the right to an opinion.. But I darn f***ing don't have to give it up and join a failed system just to get the right to an opinion on how my government is managed.

  18. Roshan, you miss understood the meaning intended your apparent life saving of five poor people are fine but you can save thousand lives in every way, daily if you are sitting there in policy making and implementation table at the highest point that was my intention behind writing such a comment. Remember Bartand Russel ‘best thinker is he who thinks alone’
If you have to do and use your scalpel to save this land and nation then do it.

  19. but thats just it, June. I do save lives... and I too mean thousands.. with my bare hands even. I do use my head and know when and how to identify the critically deranged part of the body and try to fix it..
Frankly, I dont see politicians doing anything near my level of work to society... driving in chaueffered cars and A/C planes, getting 5 star treatment and then handing out packages to the people.. they would have seen sleepless nights for the first time cos they were glued to the TV coverage of Mumbai blasts... we do it on a daily basis..
This is , in the end, how I can contribute to a better world.. keeping you all alive.
