What was the last personalized gift you gave someone?

by - September 22, 2015

Today's Blog-Tember challenge asks us to "Get creative! Sketch, paint, dance, play music."

Once more, like it did for Karna, when I need my skills the most, they tend to desert me.
So instead, I would like to showcase a creative gift - as awesome as a Personalized Photo Fleece Blanket - that I received this weekend from a dear friend.

Years ago, I had written about her in a much beloved post "Her Happiness Matters to Me". The fact of the matter is that we finished celebrating a decade of friendship this year, we realized. During this time, we have met each other a grand total of three times. And yet, we trust each other implicitly. We remove our masks and allow each other to see the 'scars of our life' and our imperfections. We look beyond the various barriers and points of awkwardness - cultural, gender, age, awesomeness (!!) and what not and just gel. That's based on a singular factor that transcends all the above - trust. When you trust someone and earn their trust in return, friendships become quite easy to maintain, I find.

Anyway, this year she has started to give wings to her hidden creative urges, creating handmade art on demand. So she decided to surprise me when I visited Mumbai this weekend with a personalized one she made just for me.

The wordings that accompany this work are thus:

Squeezed among the maddening crowd,
The roar of the world in his ears so loud,
Trapped within those woven rules,
In the hands of fate he a mere tool,
But let not your heart be bound said she,
Spread ur wings and set ur dreams free,
No matter what the world says,
Take courage and blaze ur own way...

Pretty apt for me and the year (and life!) I have had. I have promised her that I will treasure it as I do our friendship ...until the day I find out she's a famous artist and this work counts as an original "NLimited" work of art. Then this baby goes up on EBAY instantly and I get a bunch load of money!!

I used to love giving stuff that had a personal touch to it - hand written letters, cards with a personal message, small gifts with hidden meanings. There is something about such presents that just makes them stand apart from the usual humdrum gifts and whatsapp/facebook/twitter greetings and emojis.

So here's my question to you - when was the last time you gave a specially personalized gift to someone and what was it?

  1. Beautifully done artwork. You are lucky to be gifted with such handmade gifts, Roshan. To answer your question, I am making one right now for my husband's birthday tomorrow. :)

I used to give personalized gifts many times when I was younger - especially crocheted crafts (I've been crocheting for some 45 years). I was intending to give my son an afghan - in his favorite color combination, wool for cold winter nights - the problem is, I've been working on it for two years now. Shame on me!!

  4. What a nice gift you got from your wonderful friend. Don't give it away when she gets famous :)

I have gifted Piyush something personalized every year on his birthday. But this year I baked a chocolate cake for him. With a toddler in tow, that's what I could manage. Best was when I made a surprise Buddha painting for his office cabin and he got very happy :)

  5. What a beautiful piece of art, and such a special message. I'm actually working on a super-secret piece of my own art as a special gift for a milestone wedding anniversary - I hope the recipients love it!

  6. nice art that you received. God bless your friendship, it's good to have someone to talk to without mask and you had met only a few times?
I love preparing personalized gifts and I encourage my child to do the same for special occasions. I too got some creative gift from my best friend few years ago and not anything recently that I can remember.

  9. I agree... it is nice to have a few people like that in your life.
Good to hear that you are nurturing the next generation to do the same... it is something I fear many of the present generation have lost touch with - personalized gifts

  10. haha... this must be one spectacular afghan :) Still, two years means surely you are almost done! Anyway, it's brilliant that you have actually been doing so for over 4 decades. Respect.

Oh I loved that gift. I'm a total sucker for personalisation. And I love to personalise gifts that I give too. I am quite a regular at those sites that personalise stuff. And if I cannot think of anything I at least try to wrap it differently.

Such a sweet friend... And a talented artist too! Lovely artwork. I love making personalized cards, but that's the most creative I can get! ;) So I'm thinking, and can't recall when was the last time I got a handmade or personalized gift...hmm...will have to share this post with friends & family...hope they take a hint! ;)

  18. Haha... For me, if I try to wrap it, it invariably ends up "unique" due to my poor efforts :)

Wow. It's been a while. I get ideas all the time and even buy supplies, but then somehow most of the projects never get completed. :/ For our anniversary one year, I had my husband's and my names tattooed on my left shoulder along with a claddagh symbol. Then a couple of years earlier, he went with our children to Texas to visit his mother, while I had to stay at home for my job. It was the first time ever I'd been away from my children all at the same time. I had three hearts tattooed on my right shoulder, each one with on child's initial and birthstone color.

  22. I honestly had to google to find out what a claddagh symbol was :)
But seriously, lovely to see such a wonderful expression of love and commitment.

  23. I agree... personalized touches add an extra dimension to gifts. You really appreciate those gifts...

  24. Yes... definitely share it with a "oh, some people are so lucky! Wish my friends were as creative and awesome as this" tag :D
If they can't take that hint, then TAG them directly :D

  25. you don't really need to be an artist I find... just the thought that you made an extra effort (beyond the call of duty!) should suffice often

  26. I used to love giving them too... and mine would invariably revolve around words and cartoons to some extent. Been awhile though...

  27. Its been awhile for me too honestly. I need to make amends as well.
