While talking to a dear friend recently, I was surprised to find that while she knew of most of the characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, she had not had the chance to see all of them. Having started late on the 'Marvel movie fan club', she was understandably lost now, what with a decade of movies to catch up on.
With less than 2 months to go for Thor: Ragnarok (which going by the trailers and under the maverick direction of the hilarious Taika Waititi, looks likely to be an instant classic), I figured I would help those who wanted to catch up and be up to date on the Marvel world before Thor 3 arrives.
Iron Man, Captain America and the rest whom we have met a decade ago are not the same individuals anymore, their motivation, allegiances and even friendships having gone through some serious twists and turns over the course of these movies.
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Iron Man (2008)
Iron Man 2 (2010)
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Thor (2011)
The Avengers (2012)
Iron Man 3 (2013)
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) & Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) *
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Ant-Man (2015)
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Black Panther (2018)
Doctor Strange (2016)
Spiderman: Homecoming (2017)
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Captain Marvel (2019)
Avengers 4 (2019)
SpiderMan 2 (2019)

Are you a Marvel Movie fan? Which have been your top 3 favourite movies from the list above till date?
With less than 2 months to go for Thor: Ragnarok (which going by the trailers and under the maverick direction of the hilarious Taika Waititi, looks likely to be an instant classic), I figured I would help those who wanted to catch up and be up to date on the Marvel world before Thor 3 arrives.
Why knowing your Marvel Movie Characters Matters Right Now
This matters not just for watching Thor 3 and understanding the presence of the Hulk in the movie but also because as I mentioned earlier, the story line that has spanned a decade begins its final descent next year with the main villain Thanos finally coming to Earth to get the Infinity Stones & Gauntlet and thus facing every single superhero we have met in one of the biggest budgeted films this decade - Avengers: Infinity War.Iron Man, Captain America and the rest whom we have met a decade ago are not the same individuals anymore, their motivation, allegiances and even friendships having gone through some serious twists and turns over the course of these movies.
The first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War will likely arrive close to the release of Thor: Ragnarok in October and the description (available online) features everyone. Makes sense thus to catch up on your Marvel Cinematic Universe story line then, does it not?
Based on the chronological events of the story (and not release dates), the order for you to watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be:
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Iron Man (2008)
Iron Man 2 (2010)
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Thor (2011)
The Avengers (2012)
Iron Man 3 (2013)
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) & Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) *
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Ant-Man (2015)
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Black Panther (2018)
Doctor Strange (2016)
Spiderman: Homecoming (2017)
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Glitches in the timeline system:
- I placed an asterix besides Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) because while the chronological difference is barely 4 months between the two films, it is tough to place them alongside the above timeline since the events happen in a different set of planets altogether. They likely occur after Thor 2 (considering the end-credit cameo of the Collector.)
- Between Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Captain America: Civil War & Spiderman: Homecoming, there are time line errors if you really scrutinize them but they do not throw you for a loop.
What's coming up next?
The movies that have been green-lighted so far for the coming years by Marvel are:Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Captain Marvel (2019)
Avengers 4 (2019)
SpiderMan 2 (2019)

DeleteGreat post! Was good to read about the order of the movies. Didn't know about that.
ReplyDeleteIt will help especially if someone need to binge watch it in the days to come
DeleteAh ha!! exciting entertainment coming up!!!!
ReplyDeletedefinitely so...a lot of fun ahead
DeleteThis post is really thankful for someone like me who has followed the Marvel movies on and off. I have seen only 50% of the movies you mentioned in your list. this post gives me my MArvel movie watching goals for the near future.
ReplyDeleteyou have 50 days until Thor 3 arrives :) Get busy watching!
DeleteIron man, Thor and Guardians of the galaxy are my top 3.. can wait for Thor 3
ReplyDeleteThor is highly underrated in my opinion. For such a different fantasy tale, they did a decent job providing twists, some lovely visuals and a very engaging villain
DeleteI love the way the characters all pay homage to each other , at some time or the other and though iron man is my fav , I like how the character arcs change with time . Thanks for chronology
ReplyDeleteExactly. Their arcs have changed dramatically from the first part to the third. That's some major progress. They bear the scars of their choices, actions and wars.
DeleteLove this post! Thanks for putting it together! ticked off most of these. balance added to my TBW list. and looking forward to the new releases -- so many more..yaay!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I've always been a huge fan of the hulk and spiderman, so it should be no surprise that my top two are the 2008 Hulk, and Spiderman: Homecoming. But, my third is a toss up between Dr. Strange and Thor: Ragnarok. Ragnarok has some of the most entertaining action and plot, but Dr. Strange is just so different and I love Strange's character.
