#WorldCancerDay: We Can, I Can

World Cancer Day is on February 4th.
For three years, from 2016 to 2018, the theme for this day has remained the same: We Can, I Can.

So what does We Can, I Can actually mean?

The campaign aims to showcase how we - as individuals as well as a group - can do our bit to reduce the burden of cancer on an individual, a family and a society. Cancer is not someone else's battle. It affects us all. It affects our loved ones. And we can make a difference.

Presently, nearly 9 million individuals die from cancer every year of which nearly 4 million die prematurely. How, you ask, can you make a difference? Well, you can do so both as a 'We' as well as an 'I'.

WE CAN

  • CREATE Healthy schools, workplaces and cities.
  • INSPIRE action and take action to advocate change.
  • PREVENT cancer by choosing healthy options.
  • SUPPORT cancer victims in their journey.
  • CHALLENGE perceptions and CHANGE policies.
  • IMPROVE access to cancer care.
  • JOIN FORCES to make a difference.

The theme of World Cancer Day - We Can, I Can - aims to showcase how we - as individuals as well as a group - can do our bit to reduce the burden of cancer on an individual, a family and a society. Cancer is not someone else's battle. It affects us all. It affects our loved ones. And we can make a difference. #WorldCancerDay #WeCanICan

I CAN

  • MAKE healthy lifestyle choices.
  • ASK for support.
  • UNDERSTAND that early detection can save a life.
  • CONTROL my cancer journey.
  • LOVE, and be loved.

What does the theme of World Cancer Day - We Can, I Can - really mean? #wecanican #worldcancerday

The idea of talking about World Cancer Day is not just to remind people of the dreaded disease but to bring about a life-saving awareness within you. The final goal is to cause change at all three levels:
  1. DECREASE THE INCIDENCE by increasing knowledge about cancers and carcinogens.
  2. PROMOTE EARLY DETECTION to give one the best chance to beat cancer.
  3. BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE during the course of treatment and after.
So don't shy away from this topic just because the word springs up a negative connotation in your head. Ask your doubts, educate yourself, care for those around you going through their cancer journey and help fight for better policies for yourself as well as your society.

Remember, #WeCanICan make a difference.

Let me know what you think.

  1. Undoubtedly cancer is a terrible disease... And it's shocking how the numbers keep rising. It is important to talk about it... To understand what the patients and their family go through.

  2. Much needed initiative. I do hope people take this to heart and speak openly about it, seek counsel and move forward on the path to treatment.

Side note: Love the Pinterest graphics, Roshan. Pinned both :)

  5. I have seen cancer closely and after having read 'When Breath Becomes Air' recently, I know the pain this causes to the patient as well as to their close ones.

We need more initiatives like this and the survivors should come out, talk and encourage people to heal and get better.

  7. Lovely graphics Doc- very very creative. I am trying to get onto Pinterest and been noticing what everyone is doing for it and thought to mention yours look fantastic.

Cancer is a dreaded disease indeed but its curable with early detection and spreading awareness about it a great way to work towards eliminating (hopefully) it altogether from the world
