When an Arcade went the Extra Mile for an Autistic Child

Dave and Buster's is an American restaurant and entertainment franchise that offers its customers a dine-in restaurant service alongside a fully lit-up video arcade for kids (and adults?) to enjoy. As of March 2019, they have 125 centers across America and Canada.

I want to talk to you about one specifically - Dave and Busters at Braintree, Massachusetts.

When the mother of an autistic child asked for help choosing the best time for her child to pop in, Dave and Busters arcade center did one better

Stephanie Saad has a 4 year old son, Jordan, who is non-verbal and autistic. One of the few things that excite him is playing video games. Stephanie did take Jordan and his twin sister Sophie to Dave and Busters at Braintree one afternoon but had to leave after barely five minutes because Jordan got overwhelmed by the crowd and became extremely agitated.

Stephanie pinged a mail to Michelle Pena, the event coordinator at Dave and Buster, asking if she could be informed about the least busy timings at the center so that Jordan would hopefully be less scared if he came at those times to play video games.

Dave and Busters did one better. To Stephanie's surprise, the center opened up early on a fixed date just for Jordan, Sophie and a few of their close friends.

All the children were given gift play cards worth $15 and most of the video games were set to allow unlimited play for Jordan and his friends. They even arranged for a few extra surprises and games just for Jordan.

For a mother who has had to leave public areas on multiple occasions to avoid creating a scene because of her son, Stephanie just sat there that day crying tears of joy, as her autistic child laughed and played to his heart's content, enjoying a moment in his life that was made possible purely by the extra efforts of kindness by the entire staff of Dave and Busters that morning.
