Know Your Show: Castle #AtoZChallenge

Dr Roshan Radhakrishnan

This post is part of my #A2ZChallenge for April 2016 where my theme is TV Sitcoms.
For the letter C, I choose Castle.

Premise:

A famous mystery novelist uses his influence to get to follow Detective Kate Beckett and her team as part of research for his next mystery novel series, changing their lives forever.

10 reasons you will love it:

1) While police procedurals like Bones and CSI have forensics as their USP, Castle's USP remains the lead duo.

2) The palpable chemistry between the two lead characters is simply magnificent and would be in anyone's top 10 romantic TV couples list. Heartfelt and tender, they show you how the little moments in love matter.

3) The whole world agrees actually. They have constantly won TV Guide Fan Favourite Awards for Favourite TV Couple for over 3 years, besides individual awards for Best Crime Drama Tv Actor/Actress.

4) The show itself has a much more pleasant and vibrant air to it than most of its crime solving competitors in the genre and successfully balances humour, suspense, friendship and romance.

5) Nathan Fillion nails his role as a charming successful playboy/author who finds himself attracted to the lead detective and yet unsure. For all his suaveness and false machismo, he is awkwardly silly and school boyish around the woman he is scared to tell he loves.

6) Stana Katic has been phenomenal as Homicide Detective Kate Beckett who is initially disdainful of Castle's silly antics but slowly warms up to his personality. She has her own personal demons that haunt her and are gradually revealed as the series progresses.

7) Supporting Cast has been well chosen: Susan Sullivan & Molly Quinn as Castle's mother and daughter lend a strong emotional and often intellectual shoulder to lean on for the man they both share. Jon Huertas and Seamus Dever as Detectives Ryan and Esposito as Team Beckett are a wonderfully in-sync buddy team, helping her out in mysteries while enjoying Castle's antics.

8) The mysteries are actually quite good. Unusual murders inevitably bring out the 'insane theories' of our hyperactive titular character. Heaven help Kate if he ever ends up being right!

9) Lead couples falling in love has been the death knell of many a show (including Bruce Willis' career-making "Moonlighting".) Castle successfully has dodged this bullet even 8 seasons in with some clever twists.

10) Personal opinion: You find yourself smiling as you watch this couple fall in love slowly and gently before your eyes. Add in some smart crime solving and you have a very enjoyable show.

One of many Fan-made videos, I find this version of Mads Langer's "Fact Fiction" to be the perfect depiction of what Castle is all about. Listen to it and tell me you don't love it... I dare you!

If aliens were to judge us based solely upon this show:

They would learn from Richard Castle and bring coffee for their fellow alien ship mates every morning just to see them smile. They would also finally work up the courage to tell them they loved them.

    Trivia:

Did you know the novels Castle wrote about Beckett - 'Heat Wave', 'Naked Heat' & 'Heat Rises' are available as actual novels?! And that Marvel Comics actually released a graphic novel based on Castle's character from the novel titled 'Castle: Richard Castle's Deadly Storm'.

Let me know what you think.

    1. I love Castle but Beckett remains my favourite. And you're right about the supporting cast. Everything comes together perfectly in this one. Also I love the fact that despite being a crime/mystery show it isn't dark or gruesome.

      1. True. Beckett's character is absolutely wonderfully written...
And yes, them choosing not to go consistently dark like some of the other shows is what helps them stay unique.

Quantico still has to convince me... I like the star cast but I am not won over by it yet.
And Homeland lost out in my list to a show I feel deserved far more credit than it got

    26. I absolutely love Castle!!! One of the best mystery/crime shows we've had in recent times.

I love Rick and Kate equally. Oh what wonderful chemistry they share! The supporting cast is brilliant as well. Especially Martha. I love the relationship she shares with her son. I also love the mature relationship Castle shares with Alexis. It is so heart warming :)

The Mentalist was a poor rip-off of Castle I feel. Simor Baker just doesn't have enough charisma to carry off such a role. He's a bit too cold :P

      ReplyDelete
      Replies
      1. That's why I focused on the chemistry for these two. Other shows may win on technical aspects and forensics but the magic these two weave... You just didn't have that in Mentalist

Yes, I do think the characters (not just the leads, but supporting characters too) are the winning elements of the story. They all have their life and personality, they are all very sympathetic and just nice people.
And yes, the mystery are (generally) quite good and enjoyable.
