The Rabid dog

Dr Roshan Radhakrishnan

A puppy sits in a corner. A pudgy kid comes along and throws a stone at it. The puppy retreats. The kid laughs proudly at his achievement and saunters off. The next day, the same event is repeated. Everyday, stones are thrown at the pup. Finally, one day, the pup, bruised and bloodied, turns around and growls menacingly, teeth bared in anger as the child approaches. The kid dutifully calls everyone around and points the sight of the bloodied dog to them. He clarifies to all who will listen that he always knew the pup was rabid and that was why he did the things they did. They all congratulate him for his foresight and join him, stoning the pup till it dies. Proud of themselves for saving the town from being attacked by a rabid dog, they all go home.

For many years, I have witnessed this metaphor played out in real life in front of my own eyes. People with bad intentions in their heart constantly grate those who are just looking to get by and when they retaliate out of frustration, they are accused of always having been evil within.
I don't have any answers to this ; no solutions. It is just an observation that has always angered me. People bringing others down to their level of indecency and then destroying them with experience. I wish I knew a cure. I wish I could help.

  10. I think the first time a srtone is thrown on someone, one must respond..not with a fight or aggression, but assertion.

  11. Being good is useless if you are not being smart. I think people should not put with constant grating and keep building up till they burst one fine day. First time someone gets on your nerves, ignore 'em, second talk to 'em, third time depending on if it is colleague, friend or family talk to your boss/common friend/ family. Still no respite screw the F@#$%r's happiness before he gets you.
But if you ignore all 4 times and finally at 5th cry foul then u kinda had it coming all along

  13. yes.. thats so true.. such mentalities do exist..and sadly in big number.. ppl like these do such things to outdo others or just to prove themselves that whatever they do is always correct.. n it gives them inner satisfaction to do bad to others.. but there r nicer mentalities too.. hope god brings more of the later mentalities on earth... hope and oh so wish that such mentalities do not exist at all.. nice post and a very thought provocating post..!!

  14. Renu, could u be more specific ?

Anon, sigh...if only i knew this wisdom before. I was a fan of Rohan's view but now I change alleigence to urs..

Meet,as the saying goes, you're "preaching to the choir"... have seen it happen so many times, have been a victim of this so many times,it's ridiculous.

  15. what you said here applies so much partly on me and partly on my beloved-i keep telling him people take advantage of his niceness n throw troubles at him knowing he would not retaliate and that makes him suffer a lot of times...

also i am forced to be a tad indifferent n critical of certain people n situations in life coz i was provoked to being like that...

    such is life...shit happens!

  16. DocP, sorry doc..life's taught me a lot of things and one of them is that such ppl rule the world...and they tend to win eventually..

Suruchi, i wish i could become like u... really i do sometimes. i keep making the mistake of keeping quiet when im in such a situation and that screws me up eventually..

  18. You are like my husband then, like I always suspected:-)

and I have given up on him...life would teach you your lesson...no person can..I have tried!

also it took a whole lot to make me realize that sometimes you just have to stop taking shit from others...the cup brimmith over when there is no space left to take anymore...everyone has their brims...we reach there sooner or later and then a change comes!

  19. "People bringing others down to their level of indecency and then destroying them with experience"...I Guess the above sentence says it all...

  20. Sujatha, thanks...

Suruchi, life really has. believe me. I have seen some pretty amazing betrayals and been the rabid dog in some very weird tales...as u and Anonymous rightly point out, sometimes it needs the brim to finally runneth over for there to be change, even if it isnt a change we want.

    Simply me, sadly, yes...

  21. i agree with anon . . Especially his first line 'being good is useless if you are not being smart'.

It kind of sums up things. It doesnt tell you not to be good. Coz goodness has no comparison. But given that 'goodness' is sometimes mistaken to be 'weakness' and hence exploited. . . It is the right and also the duty of the 'good' to be smart and not put up with crap.

But, 'good' you must be. . . To the best of your abilities.

  22. True Jalpari..have to be good to the max...beyond that, well... I guess everyone has to ffind out his inner evil someday...

  23. I so wish I'd a cure too.

It takes courage to stand up for the right and it takes courage to stand up against the wrong.

Some people do that..but I wish there were more.

  24. Illeen... it isnt like in the comic books where good eventualy wins..somehow real life has forgotten to learn from these anecdotes we used to read as kids...
