He is crying.
That is the first thing that strikes me as I cross the street towards him. I see people walk past him as he sits on the ground, his eyes staring at them with hope as he raises his hands towards them. There must be something wrong with him because they do not look at him as they pass him by.

He is talking.
It is a language I have tried to understand for a long time but it eludes me. I understand the tones of the voices occasionally but never the words. He is talking to them but they do not listen as they pass him by.

He is begging.
I understand that now as a woman throws a coin at him. He tries to touch her feet but she withdraws, her disgust apparent as she walks away. He picks up the coin from the ground and kisses it. Nobody cares as they pass him by.

I come to him.

I want him to stop crying. I want him to be happy. Unlike all those who passed him by, I don't have the right words to tell him because I don't speak his language. I don't have coins to give him because I don't have any money. So I give him the only thing I have.

I place my paw upon his hand and wag my tail. He looks at me, shocked by the contact with a fellow living creature. I climb onto his lap and place my paws upon his gaunt frame gently. He doesn't resist. I lick his tears away gently, willing him to understand what I have to say. A moment later, he does.

He is smiling.
He knows that he is loved.

Wow! Wonderful Roshan. We often come across animals that aremore sensitive than we human beings.
Thanks Geeta. Often? I find that animals are usually more selfless than human beings all the time.
Thanks Karanth :)
And yes, I've gift wrapped a private jet... its waiting at the airport nearest where u live. Just go and ask them to deliver it to your house :p
High praise from a person well known for his creativity :D
Thanks Bhavya... glad you liked it.
Thanks Vishal... wanted to focus on the three aspects of the quote from a very different place :D
Thanks Tulika. I really wanted to write on that prompt from a selfless point of view... and when I thought about it, this was easily the most selfless example I could think of... a dog's love for man.
Thanks Gayu... exactly. Sometimes we yearn to hear words of love... the fact is that love can really be all around us, if we are ready to accept it.
Thanks Kalpana... was definitely aiming to be different :D
Go get a puppy... best investment you will ever make in your life..
Unfortunately, so many people do not realise that now...
Thanks... glad you liked it. Looked to be different.
Exactly... its a true instance of universal love in my eyes.
Thanks Beloo. Glad you liked it.
Thanks Nabanita... was looking to keep it short and simple and yet convey a message
Thanks Michelle. Love really does come in so many forms...

I totally agree.. you cant beat a dog when it comes to selfless love, especially!
Humanity cannot hold a candle to animals in many facets, I feel.
Thanks Shalini... sometimes keeping it simple is the easiest way...
I kept it short so that I wouldnt have to leave too many clues for that :D
True... I think animal lovers would definitely enjoy it more :D
it's something thats becoming more and more relevant in today's day and age...

Nice tale, Doc!
Just to let you know that I was here - over a year late - but I'm reviewing the entries to make sure the results of this contest are announced finally. My apologies for the inordinate delay. Keep writing, Roshan!
